Product Highlights

  • Shikargah is a breathtakingly beautiful piece of pure art on silk.
  • Woven only by about five percent of the weavers in Benaras, this is an extremely rare weave.
  • It is made in the kadhua, meenakari and kimkhwab techniques on the jaala looms in Banaras
  • The traditional designs feature animal & bird motifs and are the benarasi weavers’ tribute to ‘shikar’, the royal hunting hobbies of the kings in medieval times.
  • The striking gemstone inspired colors amalgamated with the traditional elements of design define this striking six-yard beauty.
  • A Shikargah saree requires unprecedented skill and investment of time, with two weavers working simultaneously to create a piece.
  • The saree deserves a place in a vintage saree collector's wardrobe
Our ancestors are believed to have migrated to India, and Banaras, from the region around Persia (present-day Iran) or even further north, from Central Asia. With them came not only the technique of brocade weaving but also the vocabulary of motifs and their style of rendering floral and animal images. A characteristic motif of Banaras brocades, the Shikargah or hunting scene, typically illustrates hunters on horseback or on elephants, wielding guns, and pursuing deer and tigers. This scene is the staple of medieval Persian decorative arts including carpets, fabrics, metal ware and ceramics and is adopted by us in Banaras on these gorgeous sarees.
