  • Double ikat Patola sarees are known for their gorgeous colors, intricate designs and durability.
  • Woven by the patrons, only the last two families of the Salvi community are left with the wealth of knowledge to weave these invaluable arts.
  • Follows the traditional intricate and complex art of Tie and Dye where warp and weft threads are dyed before weaving
  • The fact that the print like beautiful design emerges as the colorful threads get woven as the weaving progresses is very fascinating and intriguing.
  • The design is so precise, it looks like a print.
  • The silk used in making double ikat Patola is of the finest quality using 8 ply technique, there is no other weave that uses this high quality silk the closest is Kanchi pattu in 4 ply.
  • The most unique quality of double ikat patolas is that they are reversible which means the weave is so accurate that the saree can be worn on either side.
  • Another intriguing feature is that the pallu is woven on either end of the saree thus there is no right or wrong side to the saree and can be worn from any side and any end!
  • The quality and texture of the silk is exemplary and incomparable. In short, double ikat Patola saree is an heirloom to be cherished by generations to come.
Ramchandbhai Salvi gives us an insight into the laborious weaving process of Double ikat patan Patola sarees. The warp and the weft silk threads are tied separately that have distinct knots of cotton thread composed as per the design to help keep a particular area unexposed while dying. The process of dyeing is repeated – tying, untying, retying and dyeing several times to dye in different shades and colours and patterns. After the dyeing process, the threads of the warp are put together in a sequence on the loop so the design becomes evident. These sarees are woven on a primitive hand operated harness looms made out of rosewood and bamboo strips and involves high precision and skill and calls for immense patience and time to shape up.
